Director’s note

I filmed my great-aunt at her collectible coin and stamp shop in Kwun Tong, one of the most densely populated districts in Hong Kong. Many came from China to this area in the industrial post-war years. My great-aunt has lived and worked, on and off, in this shop for over fifty years. Nowadays, it’s a bustling market street – full of butchers, fishmongers, greengrocers and other busy merchants – whereas trade at my great-aunt’s shop is much…quieter. Happily, this quiet gives her and I time for other things: like reading the newspaper, family and cat visits, neighbourhood gossip, stamps show and tell, and watching the day pass by.

(Together On The Stormy Road)

as sung by Pui-Fong Tan, translated by the Lam Family

Is it happiness?
Is it hardship?
How to know which is which?
Showing me kindness or causing me pain – I don’t know which
Love is stained with hate
Brightness blinds you towards the shadows
Don’t dwell on the past
Leave it behind
How sweet and how bitter life is
Cherish today
Hope tomorrow
Together we journey through hardship and tragedy
Let’s stay close to each other today
Who knows when we will be apart
Love and hate will vanish in the end
Fear not the change that comes
Storms reveal one’s true colours
Even in the waning moon, the stars shine bright
Is it happiness?
Is it hardship?
How to know which is which?
Showing me kindness or causing me pain – I don’t know which
Love is stained with hate
The brightness blinds you towards the shadow
